If you'd like to learn firsthand (and firstmouth) about the cuisine of Japan's northernmost island, head over to Mitsuwa Marketplace this weekend. (My friends tell me that the best sea urchin comes from Hokkaido.)
Mitsuwa, 595 River Road, Edgewater, NJ (201) 941-9113. The festival will be held Friday-Sunday.

Best sea urchin, eh? How good can it get? Funny, I love the infamous natto but sea urchin just doesn't work for me.
Hi Dan, you'll actually find a lot more than uni! But you have to get to Port Authority *very* early - the buses have been filled to capacity so that many passengers must wait another 30 minutes for the next bus.
I finally managed to get to Mitsuwa yesterday after waiting an hour for the next couple buses. The Hokkaido festival took up half the floor, and included Sapporo-style ramen, croquettes, male and female shishamo, and sweet red bean mochi treats!
I've heard Sapporo-style ramen is really good, but I've never tried it. So far my favorite is Hakata-style which uses a pork-bone soup. I haven't looked for it in the States yet.
You can sometimes find Hakata ramen at Ony in the West Village. I think it's a seasonal item.
